Lionji
Chinese New Year drum rhythm
What it is
Dot the eyes, wake the lion and dance to the drum: red envelopes at every shop, cai qing and jumps on the plum-blossom poles. Ready for the Year of the Goat.
You are the lion. Two dancers, one head and one tail, moving to the big drum, the gong and the cymbals. A 3D street full of red lanterns, shops waiting with red envelopes and a crowd hoping for a lucky year.
WAKE THE LION
Every new lion begins with the eye-dotting. The brush of red cinnabar touches the eyes, the mirror, the horn and the body down to the tail. Tap with the drum and the lion opens its eyes for the first time.
DANCE TO THE DRUM
Notes roll in to the drum. Tap for steps and strikes. Swipe to blink, shake the head or bow. Hold the gold bar and the tail lifts the head up high. Hold the green bar and let go right on the beat to jump.
THE STREET PERFORMANCE
Dance from shop to shop while the firecrackers crackle. Red envelopes hang at the doors and the lion rears up to reach them.
CAI QING: PLUCKING THE GREENS
At the big shop the greens hang high with a red envelope. Come close with care, rise up, chew the lettuce and scatter the leaves as a blessing for the house.
THE PLUM-BLOSSOM POLES
Jump from pole to pole at different heights. Miss the beat and the lion slips, steadies itself and carries on. There is no game over.
YOUR TROUPE
Choose a Fut San or a Hok San head. Wear the classic colours of the Three Kingdoms heroes, Liu Bei gold, Guan Yu red and Zhang Fei black, or paint your own. Give your school a name and choose the colour of its banner.
